History Zellij: clay tile covered with enamel is a pattern typical of Moroccan architecture. It is mainly used geometric mosaics on buildings, ceramic base. The zellij is an element of Moroccan-Andalusian architecture, which has fully adapted to contemporary decorating styles while maintaining an artisanal production. Appeared in Morocco in the XV century in shades of white and brown zellige art flourished in the fourteenth century under the dynasty Merinids with the use of blue, green, yellow, red will used until the seventeenth century. The old enamels with the natural colors were used until the early twentieth century and the colors had probably not changed much since the period of Merinids. Forms and Trends: Today, the color palette of rich zellige started brightly that can multiply indefinitely compositions. The most common form of zellige is the square whose dimensions are variable. Other shapes are also possible in composition: the octagon combined with a cabochon, the star, the cross. The zellige is used for walls, but also for soil. It is then molded with a thickness of about 2 cm. There is a square 10x10 cm simple or cut corner to be combined with a cabochon color. To dress the soil is used also Bejmat paved with 15x5 cm with a thickness of 2 cm. It may be natural or enamel and can occur either in a simple pattern or herringbone. |
